For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian. In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency. By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combined to form one unique reputation. As with all legends, Roosevelt is often portrayed more as a quintessential man’s man, to the point that the legend obscures the actual man.

This isn't a comment on the book that TR wrote, it is an insight into a fascinating man and I really enjoyed it. But, the edition is the worse book that I have ever purchased. They didn't even bother to print page numbers. It looks like they jacked an old text file of TR's writing and printed it with their home printer and bound this thing together. There is nothing that identifies the book on the spine. The picture they have here is printed on the front, but no table of contents, nothing. Again, I never thought all that other stuff mattered, I kind of took it for granted. But this was the worse. I feel like it is a form of theft, they took a book that I am sure the copyright expired and printed it as cheaply as possible and stuck it on Amazon to sell. No one would ever buy this edition in a real bookstore, you would drop a few more dollars to get something decent. Shame on you Amazon

Autobiography of Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt 9781502853622 Books Reviews

This book is a great read, Theodore Roosevelt takes you through the journey that was his life. The way he writes is fantastic it feels as though he is right there beside you telling the story. He also provides insight into the world of politics and battle that many of us will never experience but we can experience it through his rhetoric. The are a couple strange this with this book. The format is very strange, there is no copyright page, no publisher, the line spacing is odd and the back cover and side is blank. However we are reading the book for the words printed on the pages and everything else is just superficial.
Nearly 100 years after his death, T.R. remains fascinating the well travelled and well educated son of a wealthy man, naturalist, rancher, politician, author, police commissioner, asst. Secretary of the navy, "Rough Rider", governor, vice president...and that's just before he was 40. Then he became a very rare thing, a progressive (in the original meaning of the term before it was co-opted as a synonym for liberal) president who sought government action while stressing personal responsibility. He wanted the government to ensure the working man, whether city mechanic or rural farmer, a "Square Deal"...but he expected those people to hold up their end of the bargain by working hard, producing healthy families and being an asset rather than a burden to the nation.

This book will tell you about his journey in his own words.

Because of its age and the writing styles of the time, it may be a bit hard to get into, but for a serious Roosevelt scholar/fan, it's a "must read"
One other warning to casual readers...in the political section he makes reference to people and events long since forgotten (after all, who will remember many of today's hot topics and politicians a hundred years from now?).

But if you read his thoughts on people's need for help themselves (in addition to having the government help) many sound like they could have been said today....and hopefully will be read in the future.
If you've read any of the fine biographies out there, you owe it to yourself to read this. For the price you can't go wrong. and you'll gain a deeper appreciation of the man.
What a great person. I wish he was around today. I know we would not be putting up with the stuff we see in this day. The book was a difficult read as far as big words and long sentences.
it was just a sample of the man
This was a great read on the best president we have ever had.
Not really happy with the book, wish I would have gotten different addition
Print way to small on a white page very hard to understand
I don't usually read autobiographies. This man was amazing. I was curious about him after reading about his presidency and I never realized how much he had done.
