Celebrate the Classics Why You Can and Should Read the Great Books Xist Classics eBook Calee M Lee Reviews
Reading this provided me the impetus to start reading and rereading the classics. I thank the writer for this piece. I hope others get to discover this piece too.
How can you fault a book with the main purpose of promoting the reading of great literature? I say "main purpose" because the author's affiliation with Xist -- an ebook publisher that charges $.99 for public domain classics that may just as easily be obtained for free -- may seem to possibly suggest a less than fully altruistic, educational intent. Nevertheless, ulterior motive or not, this does encourage reading, and I am all for that. And it is free; hence, 5-stars.
Ironically, the best part of this little book is not by author Calee M. Lee (who, though an avid reader, candidly admits to never having read A TALE OF TWO CITIES), but by Italo Calvino. Lee presents 14 insightful statements by Calvino from his WHY READ THE CLASSICS and then briefly comments on each of them. Calvino is fabulous, and I look foreward to someday soon reading his complete thoughts on the subject.
This book also contains many recommended book lists with -- SURPRISE! -- links to Xist editions.
The one thing I especially liked was Lee's recognition that there are books uniquely special to each of us that may or may not be classics in the full and proper sense of that word but which still possess many of their alluring and positive, life-affecting qualities. I have many such favorites.
Even if Lee is pecuniarily motivated, she is obviously a book lover, and this is her attempt to share and promote that love of reading with others. So read this book and then grab a classic. Perhaps you may even want to start by reading a particular favorite of mine; it's a work by Charles Dickens titled A TALE OF TWO CITIES.
In the constant news cycle of outrage and falsehood, this little book was exactly what I needed. Focus on what's important. Read great books. Recommended for everyone.
